Welcome to my practice
Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the personalities of the therapist and patient and the particular problems you are experiencing. There are many different methods I may use to deal with the problems clients hope to address.

The first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your issues and needs. I will listen to your concerns and hopes for the therapy. By the end of this evaluation I will offer you my impressions. Based on the goals you identify, you and I will develop a plan of treatment and an expectation of how long this process will take.
You can expect me to listen to you, to take your concerns seriously and help you to find ways to deal more effectively with your life, with confidentiality and in a respectful manner. Your questions and comments are valuable and are welcomed at any time.
Your part will be to talk openly and honestly about what is bothering you, to attend your regularly scheduled appointments, and to work on your issues in and out of our sessions. You will be expected to keep an open mind and try new ways of dealing with day-to-day life and to work with me on deciding when your therapy is completed.

It is important to note that when you begin to work on an issue, things often seem to get worse before they get better. This is one reason I would ask you to agree to not end therapy abruptly, but to discuss your decision with me before doing so.
Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. Since therapy often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of life you may experience uncomfortable feelings such as sadness, guilt, anger, loneliness and helplessness. On the other hand, there are benefits. Psychotherapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems and significant reductions in feelings of distress. Some benefits may not be immediately apparent, but will develop over time.
Making the decision to seek therapy is the first step in changing. If you would like to make an appointment, please contact me at the number listed above. We can begin the process by having a conversation about what is bringing you to therapy. If you and I decide that working with me would be helpful, we can set up an initial appointment.
